I need it for my social network. I'm having thoughts about byethost - I've been using their free services and they've been more than great. Compared to dreamhost, I like the former better. But when I browse some web reviews, byethost seems to have a bad rep, and dreamhost is much more popular.
Well, Dreamhost is pretty legit dude. The only problem I ever had with them was due to new server moves or someone abusing the server. Other than that, they are ace and their customer support is helpful and friendly (very quick too).
All the more points for living about 30 minutes away from me hahah.
See, for a social network, i'd then recommend a Virtual Private Server/Dedicated Virtual server. Since loads of queries will be used and whatnot. Shared hosting would eventually kill you on dream host shared servers and the database servers are located separately from the other servers, thus lots of lag for big sites like that or can happen anyway. It's differently routed on Private Servers... from what I recall. Thus more reliable and faster.
Unfortunately, gets a bit expensive... well, not that *expensive*... well, with dreamhost anyway, as you can scale it according to your needs. I think you'd end up paying 336 dollars on dreamhost (300 MB RAM), with the lowest settings, each year.
I was thinking of switching on to a private virtual server actually... but the cost is the only thing that held me back (cuz I'm a cheap bastard, plus I'm still "ok" with my sites on shared servers)... what I was thinking was somehow sharing the cost with someone however. Although, not sure how that would work out and how fair that would be for everyone in involved in the long run.
And to be honest, I would stay away from sites that offer free hosting... I've read far too many horror stories.
Depends. Right now, I'd go with $60 a year. Dreamhost costs about $120, me thinks. Thanks for letting me know about the VPS/DVS. I'd probably go with that one once the site gets more populated and active, but I think I'm at least months away from that happening, hence, I'd go with something cheaper until I see the potential for growing.

Heyyy!
Sup, man. Nice to see you around.
Well, I think I've told you before about my host... but not sure if you ended up liking them or not.
What sort of project do you need it for?
That depends too you know.
That could make the difference between a private server or a shared server.
I can recommend a few places that I've heard of... just need to know for what sort of project really.

Hmm, how much are you looking to spend yearly?

Jeah, word. 60 a year ain't bad, if you're not experiencing any problems, yet. However, once traffic comes in do you think your site will be stable?
What the plan like? How much server space they giving you? Bandwidth? Also, what version of MySQL they running?
um... I'll have to check that out later and copypaste it here.
Jeah, I'd like to compare "specs", so to say ;)
Here's are byethost's Shared Hosting plans:

* 300 websites per server maximum

Not bad, I'm liking the specs/prices, minus the disk space for the VPS plans. It's doable though. Better to be upfront anyway.
Yeah, you're probably off good there. Unless you start having problems for whatever reason.
Don't really like cPanel though.
Do you know what the PHP memory limit is on their servers? Do they have a restriction on that?
